Sechelt is a spectacular piece of BC’s Sunshine Coast renowned for its stunning nature, scenic coastal walks, and… well, as the name might imply, “sunshine”.

But as all locals know, sometimes the area can be more typically “Wet Coast” than balmy sunshine.

So what is there to do in Sechelt when it rains?

We recently made our first visit to the Sunshine Coast’s largest town, and (lucky us), it poured the entire time.

Not to worry – in this post, we’ll cover the best things to do in Sechelt, BC when it rains!

1. Cozy in for a delicious brunch

As far as rainy day activities in Sechelt go, few are as delicious as our first pick: going out for a tasty brunch!

Basted Baker is a local institution in Sechelt with a mouthwatering assortment of standard brunch fare, from eggs benny smothered in decadent hollandaise to healthier bowls filled with roasted potatoes, egg and veggies.

Of course, one glance at their line-up of baked goods and you’ll be tempted to grab some treats to go as well.

The only catch? It’s super busy & first come first serve, so come early to try your luck at securing one of the few indoor tables, or one of the tables in the cozy (covered) patio in the back.

PRO TIP: This is a small place, so food can take a while to get to you on a busy day. Make sure you grab a coffee or a drink to tide you over while you wait (and declare to all those hungry people in line that you are, in fact, not just hogging a table for nothing!)

2. Go brewery hopping

And if you’re looking for something a bit stronger than coffee, Sechelt happens part of the BC Ale Trail, a network of local BC breweries (and cideries) along the Sunshine Coast.

So, naturally, visiting a brewery is one our top rainy day things to do in Sechelt.

For a cozy pick, Batch 44 is one we’d highly recommend. This is the first craft brewery to set up shop in downtown Sechelt, and despite its young age (it was only established in 2019!), it has become a beloved neighbourhood institution.

With 80 seats, a tasty food menu, and an exciting rotation of craft beers, this is one wonderful place to spend a few hours when it’s raining.

For the indecisive, $8.50 is all you need for a Tasting Flight, which allows you to pick four options (ciders included!) – a great chance to experiment and find the ideal brew to bring home.

PS: They also offer Bricker Cider at Batch 44, which means you get to sample another one of Sechelt’s small, family-owned businesses under the comfort of one roof!

3. Do a bit of second hand shopping

While Sechelt’s main shopping area is small, it still has a handful of second hand offerings that make for a great rainy day browse session.

St Mary’s Thrift Store has a wide selection for thrift store prices (think $2 – $20), whereas Twisted Consignment and Pretty Natty Duds offer more curated picks at a higher price point.

That doesn’t mean good deals aren’t to be found though – Twisted had an entire rack of Lululemon for over 50% off retail prices when we stopped by!

4. Browse some local boutiques

Besides thrift shops, downtown Sechelt is home to an eclectic assortment of shops and boutiques offering everything from fashion and gifts to fancy oils & vinegars.

You can visit the downtown Sechelt directory here for a full list of shops, but we really enjoyed browsing for…

  • Zero-waste goodies at the Forget Me Not Refill Station
  • Canadian fashion/lifestyle brands at Moorestock Outfitters
  • Sporting goods/outdoorsy apparel at Trail Bay Source for Sports

For extended coverage from the rain, there’s also Trail Bay Centre, a locally owned mall with dozens of shops.

While many of these are more of your standard chains/practical shops like grocery/dollar stores, it’s a convenient little stop to hide from rainy weather for a little while.

5. Visit Burnett Falls

Sechelt on a sunny day is perfect for beautiful walks and hikes… and while rainy weather really limits your ability to enjoy local nature to its fullest, one happy side consequence of heavy rain is powerful waterfalls!

If you don’t mind a little rainy trek, we can recommend visiting Burnett Falls as a rainy day Sechelt activity.

A short (slightly uphill) 10 minute walk from the parking area will bring you to a lovely viewing platform where you can get up close and personal with the falls – a great scenic reward for minimal work!

6. And stop to take in views at Burnett Beach

If you happen to be visiting Burnett Falls, then a pretty little detour we can recommend is Burnett Beach, a short drive away.

While not so much a sprawling beach with plenty of lounging space, Burnett Beach is a lovely rocky beach that offers gorgeous views over the inlet… that looks nice even on a rainy day.

7. Visit some art galleries

While we didn’t get a chance to stop by any art galleries in Sechelt during our recent visit, one of the Sunshine Coast’s claims to fame is that it has more artists per capita than any other region in the country.

So, of course, art gallery hopping is another great thing to do in Sechelt when it rains! Check out this list of Sunshine Coast museums for some ideas on where to go.

8. Go for a rainy day stroll on Davis Bay Pier

Located just South of Sechelt proper, you’ll find the gorgeous Davis Bay Pier.

Sure, while these views are usually best admired when the sun is shining, there’s something magical about seeing the pier with a gloomy vibe too:

9. Lastly: Drive over to Gibsons to enjoy some more rainy day activities

Sechelt is a lovely town, but in a town that size, there’s only so many rain-friendly activities you can enjoy.

Luckily, Sechelt is within close driving distance to Gibsons, where more shops, breweries and activities await!
